Abstract

This paper explores the stylized use of English by and for speakers of Italian, particularly in media about Italy?s current prime minister and his political party. I briefly review the literature on Italian-English linguistic hybridity and draw on the citizen sociolinguistic term inglaliano as a means of posing a different paradigm for thinking about language contact between Italian and English. Drawing on work on mock languages, enregisterment, and stylization, I pose possible ways of thinking about inglaliano as a source and example of language ideological metacommentary.
