Abstract

It has been relatively clear over the last years that multilingual settings support new linguistic variation and the emergence of new linguistic patterns. Contemporary urban vernaculars have emerged among adolescents in multilingual settings in large cities throughout Europe. This paper addresses one of the structural characteristics that has been pointed to in the descriptions of contemporary urban vernaculars, namely deviations from the syntactic verb second (V2) constraint in Germanic languages.
